IWPA HISTORY

My research into the history of the Isle of Wight Ploughing Association, from the IWCP records, is complete. The first report from dates back to 1899, although there is a mention of.....
"After an interval of over 30 years the very interesting agricultural custom of holding ploughing matches in the Island has been revived, thanks to the laudable determination of the Rural Council of the Isle of Wight Branch of the National Agricultural Union to do its utmost in a practical way to improve the prospects of agriculture and those immediately connected with so vitally important an industry. The competition in question took place at Heasley Farm on Monday last, and, like the sheep-shearing contest held under similar auspices last summer, Monday’s competition was voted a very gratifying success, comparing most favourably with the interesting ploughing matches held in the olden days on the same farm, as well as at Stone, Bowcombe, Calbourne, Newbarn, Thorley Farm, &c."
I will continue my investigations to see if I can get any further back.
All the reports have now been typed up and I am now trying to collate together any photo's from the matches. If you have any (especially copies of IWCP ones, I would be really interested to hear from you.)
All the reports and photo's are due to be published very shortly. It won't be a best seller, and I am planning on getting it printed to demand. If you want a copy, please contact Karen at karen.sheath@btinternet.com or 07922 783091.

IWPA History

I have been doing some research into the history of the Isle of Wight Ploughing Association, mainly to find out the last time a Horse Ploughing class was ran on the Isle of Wight.  So starting at 1970 and working backwards, I was sadden to read that it was 1956, 54 years ago.
I have so far managed to keep working backwards and have got to 1953.  Since I have found it so interesting reading the names of all the ploughmen, I decided to type up the reports and share them.  To go to the IWPA section of this site click here, and then click on any year which is underlined to read the report.

Exciting news for 2011

posted Sep 3, 2010, 5:20 AM by Karen Sheath   [ updated Dec 16, 2013, 5:47 AM by Karen Sheath ]

I am pleased to announce that the date for the next Memorial Ploughing Match will be Sunday 3rd April 2011.
It may still seem a long way away, but planning has already started.  I have secured a very large piece of land at Atherfield and this means that next years match can be bigger than ever and hopefully raise lots more money for the Earl Mountbatten Hospice.
Wightlink have been very kind to us again and have agreed to fund the Judges transport and have agreed a reduced rate for Ploughmen who wish to come from the mainland and plough.  Most exciting of all for me, is that they have agreed to fund the crossing of some Horse Ploughmen and their teams to the Island.  It has been a dream of mine since the first ploughing match in 2009 to have a horse ploughing class in memory of my Grandad.  I have my fingers and toes crossed that it may just happen next year.
Keep checking for this page for the latest updates and if you would like to register your interest for next years match, please send an email to karen.sheath@btinternet.com.  This will enable me to send details and entry forms to you in the new year.
